HyunA Knowles releases her second single "(Gurlz) Break Yo' Ankle!"
Controversial Idol HyunA Knowles returned today with her second digital single, "(Gurlz) Break Yo' Ankle!", as well as a brand new image poppin' with sass and color!
HyunA showed a very bold and dark concept for her outrageous debut "So Scandalous", but now she has transformed for her second single, showing a more elegant and feminine charm with a sparkly metallic blue dress and made-by-glass high heels.
"(Gurlz) Break Yo' Ankle!" is produced by top K-Pop hitmaker Brave Brothers, who had a hard time deciding who he would give the song to out of HyunA or popular girl group SISTAR. After receiving a love call from HyunA and taking a private meeting with her in his apartment, HyunA won the song, and SISTAR were given a B-Side called "So Cool", which was later used as the title track for their first album..
"Gurlz" is an electronic song with an infectious beat that contains lyrics intended to empower young women. “Hands up high, brave gurlz break yo' ankle!”, an autotuned HyunA sings, using a serious injury as a metaphor for empowerment and strength. The song defines everything the Brave Sound stands for – it’s melodic, danceable, catchy, and most importantly, it’s very well produced. One unique aspect of the song is that Brave Brothers breathing can be heard during the breakdown, but netizens have been unsure whether this effect was intentional or not. After the premiere of HyunA's new song, Netizens rushing to our forum to share their thoughts, commenting, "This is DAEBAK!!! Best song of the year.", "I'm charmed by her flawless beauty, but ill from her poor singing.," "I'm so gonna break my ankle now. She's such a trendsetter.", "It sounds like Suzy Sooyoung's Freedom. Is she plagiarizing her labelmate?". While the feedback from music listeners has been good, AKF have learned that the Ministry of Gender & Equality are examining the song for violent subject matter, and are considering a future ban if "Gurlz" is found guilty of containing inappropriate subject matter like HyunA's debut single "So Scandalous" was.
Ignoring the potential drama around the song, a positive Trina Villota of White Entertainment shared with Newsen, "We are so happy that Hyuna's second digital single has finally been released."
She continued, "We purposely released the song on the same day as Brown Eyed Girls' new album. We are very sure that HyunA's song is just as good as BEG's title track. Although only promoting her song for three weeks, HyunA is very happy to share comeback stages with her unnies from BEG. She has been practicing for the past month and now that she'll be making a comeback on the same day as BEG, she's very confident that she will exceed BEG's comeback stage. She even asked us to hire the same vocal trainer of Jea so that she can deliver the same powerful vocals."
Once again, the statement from White Entertainment's representative had Netizens flooding our forum to share their thoughts, "Does she think she's Mariah Carey or something?", "Let's have a faith in her, poppers. Our goddess will never lie.", "I think it will be great if BEG add new members like After School did, and HyunA would be a good choice.", and "Who is HyunA Knowles?"
HyunA and Brown Eyed Girls will be making their comebacks on tomorrow's episode of Inkigayo. Stay tuned! |

Homme snag Suzy Sooyoung for "Man Should Laugh" remix
Announcing the collaboration on their website earlier this week, the duo wrote: "Soon we will release a special 'Summer Remix' of "Man Should Laugh" with Suzy Sooyoung, titled "Woman Should Laugh, Too". It's an upbeat song about how a woman can charm you with her laughter."
Speaking exclusively to AKF about the remix, Suzy said, "I love Homme's music, and after meeting them in the Music Bank waiting room I told them that it wasn't fair that only men should laugh, so I had the bold idea of remixing the song in a way that females could relate to. After gaining many new skills through my "Freedom" promotions, I am excited to present an improved image of myself alongside Homme."
When asked about the upcoming remix song on yesterday's episode of Strong Heart, Homme revealed, "We didn't plan this single, and at first the idea made us uncomfortable because we weren't fans of Suzy's single "Freedom", but then she wouldn't stop calling us about it. When we didn't answer, she had her agency phone ours, and our chairman decided that it would be a good idea. He said Suzy had many feminine charms that would appeal to both men and women, and that collaborating with her would make us seem unique, so now we are pleased to do the remix."
The news about this remix became a hot topic on forums, dividing opinion between netizens:
"What copycats. This reminds me of Eamon and Frankee", "Summer remix? Um, it's Autumn in Korea now," "Homme is my bias and I will do bad things to Suzy if she tries to kiss them," "Women deserve laughing too of course, and pretty one like Suzy need it most. Sorry for my bad English."
"Women Should Laugh, too (Summer Remix)" will be released later this month. In the meantime, you can still catch Suzy promoting her solo single "Freedom", which has reached the top ten of the GAON charts.
