“Rocker Princess” is a hit!

The musical starring Jessica Jiyeon and 2AM’s Jinwoon dethroned Arrow: The Ultimate Weapon at the box office this weekend with an impressive 1,374,109 admissions and $16,319,468,460 KRW {roughly $15.4 million USD} in ticket sales. With a mere budget of $2 million USD, the film’s success rested solely on the shoulders of its well known main cast. Director Yoon Yoo Wei commented on the film’s success.

“It was such an extraordinary experience for everyone. This wasn’t some huge special effect driven blockbuster or the epic finale of a popular franchise.” he remarked “When you have the right cast & the right script at the right time, you will have an audience. I’m so proud to have my name on this film.”

The film has received critical acclaim for its take on the well known Cinderella fairytale, as well as the K-Rock & K-Indie influenced soundtrack. Many have praised Jessica Jiyeon’s acting in the film & labeled her “one to watch” & “a perfect leading lady” for her role as Princess Sol.

With such a strong start, will the film’s success waver or keep it on top for another weekend? Keep an eye on AKF for more.

Everything you need to know about "Rocker Princess"!

Jessica Jiyeon is set to rock the big screen as the lead in the new musical Rocker Princess! AllKFlop got the full scoop with the film’s director Yoon Yoo Wei on the all star cast!

“Jesscia plays Sol: a humble princess who is cast out of her home, after her father dies a month shy of her 21st birthday - after which she becomes queen - by her spiteful stepmother, played by Lena Park. She ends up on the streets of Seoul where she befriends Lee, the leader of a rock band called The Electrocutes, played by Jinwoon.” Yoon Yoo Wei explained, “Our goal was to take a familiar story and give it a Korean twist. Every culture has their spin on a fairy tale. This is mine.”

Actress Park Eun Bin best known for her role as Go Hye Sung -age 16- in the "Dream High" finale plays Lee’s younger sister Mina, The Electrocutes’ drummer.
“Imagine a Korean White Stripes and you pretty much have Lee & Mina in a nutshell!" Yoo Wei laughed “Eun Bin is pretty energetic on the drum set, so forget the Meg White comparison…Oh! And they’re siblings, not married! Aigoooo! Please forgive me!^^”

Girl’s Day’s Hyeri & A Pink’s Eunji play the roles of the evil stepsisters.

The supporting cast boasts a number of K-Rock & K-Indie acts: Black Skirts’ lead singer Johyuil plays The Electrocutes' bassist, while TRAX, The RockTigers, CN BLUE, & Neon Bunny occupy lesser roles. 2AM's Jo Kwon makes a guest appearance as Sol's "fairy godfather".

Many have questioned why majority of the film’s songs are in English. Yoo Wei explains “Why not? We all have grown up with Western influences. The actors that can’t speak English well or at all have been given passes. I believe Engrish can be endearing, don’t you? Have you heard that clip of Narsha speaking to the American over the phone? I rest my case!” he laughs.
The film is due out on September 1st!
